Catholic Diocese of Sokoto Demonstrates Compassion: Bishop Kukah Donates Wheelchairs to Usman Danfodio Varsity Teaching Hospital

The Catholic Diocese of Sokoto, led by Most Rev. Dr. Matthew Hassan Kukah, continues to show that we are human first before religion by donating Ten (10) Wheelchairs  to the Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital (UDUTH), Sokoto.
This generous act underscores the Diocese’s unwavering commitment to supporting the sick, the marginalized, and the broader community.



The Church delegation, led by the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto, Most Reverend Matthew Hassan  Kukah, included Revd. Fr. Jude Okpanachi, the Dean of Sokoto Diocese; Sr. Ann An-iko OP, Director of Holy Family Mother and Child Hospital; Revd. Fr. Matthew Megwa, Vice Chancellor of the Diocese; Mr. William Dalogate, Director of the Justice, Development and Peace Commission (JDPC) Sokoto Diocese; and other JDPC staff.
They were warmly received by the hospital’s management, led by the Chief Medical Director, Prof. Anas Ahmad Sabir, alongside members of the hospital’s board of medical staff.

In his remarks, Prof. Sabir expressed profound gratitude to the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto for the timely donation, noting that it aligns with Teaching Hospital’s mission to provide quality healthcare to all, particularly the most vulnerable. He highlighted the hospital’s history of receiving support from prominent Nigerians and organizations, including Gen. TY Danjuma, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, and various NGOs. However, he emphasized that Bishop Kukah’s contribution stands out as a remarkable act of solidarity and compassion, reflecting the Catholic Church’s dedication to human dignity and the common good.

Prof. Sabir also showcased UDUTH’s advancements in medical services, including pioneering procedures such as renal transplants and open-heart surgeries, which have solidified the hospital’s reputation as a leading healthcare institution in Nigeria.

This donation is yet another testament to Bishop Kukah’s longstanding advocacy for the poor and marginalized. Through initiatives like this, the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto continues to embody the Church’s mission of love, service, and social justice, making a tangible difference in the lives of those in need.

The wheelchairs will enhance mobility and improve the quality of life for patients at UDUTH, ensuring that the Diocese’s gesture of compassion reverberates throughout the community. The event concluded with prayers and mutual expressions of goodwill, reinforcing the strong partnership between the Diocese and UDUTH in serving the people of Sokoto and beyond.
Most Reverend Matthew Hassan Kukah has always spoken out on insecurity and poverty which he says doesn’t scourges everyone irrespective of religion. He stands for the common humanity of Nigerians and displays it at every given opportunity.
